When bilingual advocates are not available, professional, culturally competent interpreters are critical to ensuring equal access to safety.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is never recommended to use friends, family members or other survivors as interpreters because of potential conflict of interest issues. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/esperanzaunited.org\/en\/knowledge-base\/factsheets\/providing-meaningful-language-access-and-avoiding-the-use-of-children-as-interpreters-resources-for-law-enforcement\/\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><b>children<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should never be used as interpreters for their parents. This can re-traumatize children, expose them to traumatic information, and children may not interpret information correctly for many reasons.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional interpreters are not only bilingual, but also need to know the cultural meanings behind the words in two or more languages. Their skill set and training enables them to accurately and fluently move information between two languages. There are two modes of interpreting:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Consecutive interpretation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the interpreter takes turns with the other speakers. If long statements are made, the interpreter may take notes to ensure accuracy, or ask the individual to speak in shorter sentences or pause during long statements. The interpreter repeats the statement in the second language word for word. This is the format for interpreting by telephone, for medical consultations, and for some court proceedings.<\/span><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Simultaneous interpretation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the speaker and the interpreter talk at the same time and the interpreter lags a few words or seconds behind the speaker. When the interpreter is working with just one person, simultaneous interpretation is usually done in a whisper. This is most often the format used in court proceedings.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that the skills required for effective advocacy and effective interpretation are different. Often volunteers are students at local colleges, community members, and former program participants who are trained and utilized \u201con call\u201d as interpreters\/translators to help provide bilingual services. Volunteers and staff from throughout the community serve in a \u201cbank\u201d of volunteer interpreters who agree to be \u201con call\u201d when language access services are needed.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfaws.org\/programs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Asian Women\u2019s Shelter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides access to 41 languages through their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfaws.org\/programs\/direct-services\/language-access.aspx\"><b>Multi-Lingual Access Model <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MLAM). The MLAM recruits bilingual, bicultural women from the community to become paid language advocates. These language advocates serve as a communication bridge between program advocates and shelter residents, provide emotional support for residents, and accompany them to important meetings and court hearings.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ayuda.com\/language-services\/\"><b>Ayuda Interpreter Bank<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an innovative approach that is focused on developing as many qualified, professional legal interpreters as possible. The Bank provides professional training for interpreters and tests them to ensure competence in their language skills, understanding of the legal system, and adherence to ethical standards. The Bank currently serves 27 legal services providers with 100 legal interpreters that speak about 40 languages.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-54de374 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default tf-sticky-section tf-sticky-no\" data-id=\"54de374\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;tf_sticky&quot;:&quot;no&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7b4d5af\" data-id=\"7b4d5af\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e40d93d tool-kit-accordian elementor-widget elementor-widget-accordion\" data-id=\"e40d93d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"accordion.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 id=\"elementor-tab-title-2391\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2391\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-down\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Over-the-phone interpretation (OPI)<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2391\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2391\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, when you use OPI, you dial the language line\u2019s toll-free number and provide your account information (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationallatinonetwork.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=768&amp;Itemid=1096\"><b>see Resource Building for information about OPI service costs<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). You are immediately asked for which language you need interpretation, or the \u201ctargeted language.\u201d If you do not know the name of the language and cannot identify it, the service can help you. In \u201crelay interpreting,\u201d the interpreter listens to the source language and renders the message in a language that is common to other interpreters. Additional languages are planned.
