You start by selecting a recipe, gathering all the ingredients, and then transforming them into a delicious meal. \u00a0In evaluation, you start by deciding the type of evaluation that you will conduct, gather the information, and transform it. To be able to do this transformation you need to learn how to organize, analyze, and interpret data. \u00a0In this section we will review this process.<\/span><\/p><h4 id=\"h.8gxy51l6laa7\" class=\"c21\"><span class=\"c4\">Organizing, analyzing and interpreting data<\/span><\/h4><p class=\"c43\"><span class=\"c26 c19\">You probably already collect a great deal of information about your program. For example, information about who is using your service and how many people you see every day. This information is called raw data. To make this raw data useful you need to transform it into meaningful, helpful information by\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\">organizing\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c26 c19\">it,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\">analyzing\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c26 c19\">it and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\">interpreting\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c1\">it. This raw data can be in the form of numbers (which we call quantitative data) or words (which we call qualitative data). \u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4 id=\"h.k5vzsp3xjn18\" class=\"c21\"><span class=\"c4\">Quantitative data<\/span><\/h4><p class=\"c43\"><span class=\"c26 c19\">The first step is to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\">organize\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c1\">the data to make it easy to understand and easy to find.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"c43 c73\"><span class=\"c26 c19\">We might ask our participants to fill out a survey and tell us how old they are, their gender and their place of origin. that we made from our participant survey to tell us about the people who use our services. Now let\u2019s see how we can transform raw qualitative data (words).<\/span><\/p><h4 id=\"h.j6uigxvk3f0n\" class=\"c21\"><span class=\"c34 c58\">Qualitative data<\/span><\/h4><p class=\"c43\"><span class=\"c9\">Most of the qualitative data (words) that we collect usually come from recordings of interviews or focus group discussions. \u00a0Sometimes we use data from notes either staff or participants collected about the program or specific program activities. \u00a0<\/span><\/p><h5 id=\"h.dg4hks5wb9qx\" class=\"c44\"><span class=\"c9\">Organizing qualitative data<\/span><\/h5><p class=\"c43\"><span class=\"c26\">Similar to the quantitative data, the first step is to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c68\">organize\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c9\">the data. For qualitative data, this might mean transcribing the information from recordings to a Word document or from hand-written notes to a Word document. \u00a0This allows you to have all the information in the same format so you can analyze it.<\/span><\/p><h5 id=\"h.aak7fgtxd768\" class=\"c44\"><span class=\"c9\">Analyzing qualitative data<\/span><\/h5><p class=\"c43\"><span class=\"c26\">The next step is to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c68\">analyze\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c9\">the data which consist of identifying the main themes. The following step-by- step process helps guide you through this process:<\/span><\/p><ol class=\"c5 lst-kix_81y8zeex9suv-0 start\" start=\"1\"><li class=\"c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c9\"><span class=\"c9\">First, you should write down your own observations of the activity, and any themes or topics that you remember.<\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c26\">Next, review your notes and\/or the transcriptions. Begin to highlight key statements and label these statements.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c26\">For example,<\/span><span class=\"c9\"><span class=\"c9\">\u00a0if you notice that several statements have to do with effective ways to engage the community, one label could be community engagement.<\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c9\"><span class=\"c9\">Repeat the process with the rest of the information you collected.<\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c9\"><span class=\"c9\">As you label the statements, you will notice that the themes will begin to repeat (this is what we mean by recurrent themes).<\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c9\"><span class=\"c9\">Next, group together the themes based on those that are most similar. \u00a0You may need to merge theme to narrow down your results to a manageable number.<\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c9\">This list of themes is the results of your analysis.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"c43\"><span class=\"c9\">Let\u2019s look at an example. This sample statement was obtained from focus group activities with youth about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"c43 c73\"><span class=\"c98 c26 c63 c107\">\u201cDACA allowed me to attend a university in another state.
