At the last moment, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/03\/g-s1-96296\/trump-deadline-contingency-funds-snap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two judges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ordered the government to tap into emergency funds and get payments to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/03\/nx-s1-5596121\/snap-food-benefits-trump-government-shutdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who rely on SNAP. While this ruling offered some relief to carry into the weekend, the crisis is far from over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $4.65 billion emergency funds set aside for November SNAP payments are not nearly enough to cover the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/03\/nx-s1-5596121\/snap-food-benefits-trump-government-shutdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$8 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed each month. As a result, recipients are expected to receive only half of their usual benefits, and many will face delays.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking often grapple with the impossible choice between getting to safety and affording groceries. Many don\u2019t go to a shelter unless they are certain their family will be fed while they heal and plan for a different future. That promise, often in the form of SNAP, is already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tahirih.org\/news\/all-eyes-on-snap-benefits-many-americans-will-suffer-due-to-lack-of-funding-while-the-reconciliation-bill-cuts-immigrant-survivors-off-permanently\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out of reach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for many immigrant Latin@ survivors but serves as a lifeline for those who can access it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a survivor risks their family\u2019s safety, only for their EBT card to stop charging halfway or remaining empty all month, the government loses survivors\u2019 trust. Latin@ survivors already face immense barriers when seeking help. Many fear that systems like courts, shelters, or public benefit programs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/esperanzaunited.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3.11.73-Factsheet_GeneralIPV2021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not meant for them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Community leaders and culturally specific organizations have worked tirelessly to make these systems more accessible, knowing that everyone deserves the tools to live a life free from violence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endangering SNAP yanks the thread of stability from beneath survivors who are already fighting to stand. Survivors need an open government that keeps its promises &#8211; without interruption, without excuses, and without endangering life-saving healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Survivors can\u2019t wait. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educate your representatives on how the government shutdown puts survivors of domestic and sexual violence at risk by cutting off food assistance and healthcare\u2014both of which are essential for survivors to escape violence and rebuild their lives.
