Chef <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chefashapicon\/?hl=en\">Asha Picon&#8217;s <\/a>catering was laid out across the tables; fresh flowers added a warm touch to the space, and at 8:30 people started arriving. Name tags, warm greetings, and that particular energy when people who share a purpose are all in the same room.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The heart of the event was a conversation that had been a long\u00a0time coming.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Esperanza United\u2019s President and CEO,\u00a0<\/span>Vivian Huelgo<span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0joined our Family Advocacy Director, Sarahi Mateo, for an honest discussion about\u00a0<\/span>Operation Metro Surge<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; what survivors and families lived through during that time, and what that experience continues to leave behind today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For nearly half an hour, they explored what rarely gets seen behind the headlines: the everyday fear of leaving home, the complexity of safety planning in the middle of chaos, the isolation of families with school-age children, and the added weight carried by staff and the advocates who work directly with the community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They also spoke about the origins of\u00a0<\/span>HelpMN<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; the initiative that grew out of that moment to respond to urgent needs that existing services\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0fully reach. When Operation Metro Surge unfolded, 166 people from across the community chose to give\u00a0to Esperanza United. Together they contributed more than $23,000 in grassroots donations &#8211; and combined with broader philanthropic support,\u00a0HelpMN\u00a0raised\u00a0nearly $694,000\u00a0in total.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Those funds supported Abrazo\u00a0en\u00a0Caja, a care package initiative that reached families sheltering in\u00a0place, and\u00a0were routed to area school mutual aid groups that were already trusted by families not yet connected to Esperanza United. Community organizations that were already there, already trusted &#8211; and now resourced to do more.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vivian reflected on what this crisis confirmed for her about the Minnesota community, about the allies who stepped up, and about why\u00a0Esperanza United\u00a0was born here and continues\u00a0to mobilize\u00a0so many communities from our home\u00a0here.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There was time for questions. People asked them\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0direct, thoughtful, and rooted in their own experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Afterward, more coffee. More conversations. More moments of recognition among people who do this work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vivian closed with a simple thank-you. And people stayed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That, in a way, says it all.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This work continues because people choose to invest in it.
